Mostra dedicata alla vita e alle opere del grande genio della pittura barocca italiana e all’eredità stilistica raccolta dai suoi seguaci. L’esposizione è stata organizzata dal Los Angeles County Museum of Art, dal Musée Fabre di Montpellier Agglomération, dal Musée des Augustins di Tolosa e dal Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art, sotto gli auspici del Francese Regionale American Museum Exchange (Frame). La mostra è presentata nell’ambito del programma “2013: Anno della Cultura Italiana”.

Con 56 opere, di cui otto autentici capolavori realizzati da Michelangelo Merisi, più noto con l’appellativo di Caravaggio, l’esposizione di Los Angeles rende omaggio al “pittore maledetto”, straordinario talento italiano, “rivale” per notorietà all’estero di Michelangelo Buonarroti e Leonardo da Vinci. In mostra opere che testimoniano lo stretto legame tra la sua attività artistica e una vita ricca di eccessi brutali e passionali, che alcuni critici riconoscono anche nello stile pittorico, che ha reso unico il suo lavoro d’artista.

Bodies and Shadows: Caravaggio and His Legacy introduces the work of Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio (1571–1610), one of the most popular artists of the past, rivaling in fame both Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci. The stories of Caravaggio’s life are legend, more myth than history, describing traits of personality, including passion and brutality, that came to describe the unique qualities of his work. The exhibition, made up of 56 works in all, including a record eight works by Caravaggio himself, covers the evolution of his style. Caravaggio’s legacy is expressed in work by about twenty artists from Italy, Spain, France and the Netherlands who carried into the late 17th century the strangeness, beauty and raw emotion of his work.
